Fatal accident on Louisiana Highway 594 in Monroe

The Louisiana State Police continue to investigate a crash that occurred on Louisiana Highway 594 in Monroe. So far, the only citation issued in the fatal accident has been for passing illegally. It is not known whether additional charges will be filed once the investigation is complete.

The driver sited for passing illegally was driving southbound on Louisiana Highway 594. As it came up behind another vehicle, the driver decided to pass the vehicle by moving into the northbound lane even though the vehicles were in a no passing zone. As the driver attempted to get back into the southbound lane, the rear passenger side of the vehicle rammed into the front driver's side of the other vehicle he was passing.

The impact resulted in the other driver losing control of her vehicle. It ended up veering off of the north side of the road, ramming into a culvert and flipping over. The driver was ejected from the vehicle and suffered fatal injuries. She was pronounced dead by emergency personnel at the scene. Two 11-year-old boys were injured in the crash and taken to an area hospital.

Toxicology samples were taken even though police don't believe the drivers were impaired at the time of the crash. No matter what happens with the investigation being conducted by the Louisiana State Police, the family of the victim retains the right to file a wrongful death claim to recover the costs and damages resulting from her death in this the fatal accident. Depending on the severity of the injuries received by the two children, their families may file personal injury claims for the same purpose.
